How do you start birdwatching?
You don’t need expensive equipment. Any city park works. A free app like Merlin Bird ID can name a bird from its song, so you don’t need to know species in advance. Logging each new bird you meet is part of the fun.
What’s happening at Cheonsuman Bay?
Cheonsuman is a wide bay between Seosan and Hongseong on Korea’s west coast, a regular stop for migratory birds. As of October 20, more than 100,000 winter birds had arrived, including geese, ruddy shelducks, spoonbills and common teals.
Seosan Birdland Migratory Bird Festival 2026
This year’s theme is “a family trip to see the birds of Cheonsuman.” It runs two days at Seosan Birdland and around the bay.
- Cheonsuman Birding Contest: Participants are ranked by how many species they spot within a time limit.
- Bird drawing contest: A good one if you’re bringing children.
- Nature activities: Bird observation and making food for forest birds.
- Resident-run activities: Sea fishing in Changri, bird-scene crafts and conch-shell whistle making.
- Performances: A magic show and classical music.
Can’t make it this weekend? Seosan plans birding tours every weekend in November.
First-time birding checklist

- Binoculars: They help a lot.
- Muted clothes: Earth tones disturb birds less than neon. The sea wind is cold, so dress warmly.
- Quiet and slow: Loud noises and sudden moves stress birds. Keep your distance; that’s basic birding etiquette.
- An ID app: One that works from photos or sounds makes a handy pocket guide.
Good for
- Anyone looking for a new hobby
- Families who want a nature day out with kids
- People who’d rather skip crowded foliage spots for wide-open views
