What is the exhibition?

It puts “fossil Pokémon” from the games next to real fossils of ancient life for comparison. It connects the excavation and study of fossils with the Pokémon world. Pairings described in the report include:

  • A Tarbosaurus skeleton with the Pokémon Tyrantrum (견고라스 in Korean)
  • An ammonite fossil with the Pokémon Omanyte (암나이트 in Korean), which resembles it

What sets it apart is that it is a character exhibition that also teaches paleontology.

How did it go overseas?

According to the Field Museum in Chicago, the exhibition is a touring show by Japan’s National Museum of Nature and Science, the Field Museum and The Pokémon Company International.

  • Start: it began in 2021 in Mikasa, Hokkaido, as an interactive touring exhibition.
  • Chicago: its first stop outside Japan opened on May 22, 2026, and runs through April 11, 2027. In Chicago the special exhibition needs its own ticket in addition to general admission.
  • What’s in it (Chicago): real specimens and casts such as SUE the T. rex and the Chicago Archaeopteryx sit beside fossil Pokémon, and Pokémon “professors,” museum scientists and an Excavator Pikachu in dig gear guide visitors.

Kyunghyang Games reports that tickets sold out in Japan and the US, and that Gwangju is the second venue outside Japan.

Viewing details come later. Watch the official channels of the Gwangju National Science Museum and Pokémon Korea for announcements.
