At 12:25 pm on October 7, Korea’s homegrown Nuri rocket lifted off from the Naro Space Center in Goheung, on the southern coast, on its fifth flight, and it succeeded. That is four successful launches in a row since the failed first try in 2021, and Nuri’s success rate is now 80%. News like this makes you want to see a rocket up close, so here is a short recap plus how to visit the Naro Space Center Science Museum and the Goheung Space Launch Observatory. What was different this time
- On time for the first time: Earlier launches were pushed back. This one went as scheduled.
- A record 15 satellites: The main payload was five NEONSAT micro-satellites, a constellation (a group that works as a team), released at about 576 km. Nine of the ten CubeSats separated and one did not eject. The mission counts as a success because the main satellites reached target orbit. Kyunghyang Shinmun (in Korean).
- Separation method: The rocket used a mechanical method that reduces explosives, which lowers the shock to the satellites.
- More private-sector roles: According to the pre-launch plan, Hanwha Aerospace staff took part in 20 of the 22 control consoles and were to operate 18 of them directly. For the 6th launch in 2027, the goal is for the company to handle nearly everything except a few roles such as the launch director.
Next up: the 6th launch in 2027. The shift to private-led operation is worth following.

Getting there and timing
Goheung is far from Seoul, so an overnight trip works best. Both places close on Mondays, so plan for Tuesday to Sunday. For the Hangeul Day long weekend (Oct 9–11), call ahead to confirm holiday hours. For autumn travel discounts, see my half-price travel guide, and for other events, the autumn festival calendar.
Good for / not for
Good for: families with space-loving kids, south-coast road trippers, and anyone who wants to see more after the launch news.
Maybe not for: people hoping to see the actual launch pad. The launch area is not open to the public on normal days.
FAQ
Can I see the launch pad? Normal visits cover what the museum and observatory show. Launch-site tours are reportedly offered only during special events. Check official notices.
Do I need to book? Individual visitors are listed as walk-in. Groups pay different fares, so contact the museum first.
Is it open on Hangeul Day (Oct 9)? Listed closing days are Mondays, Lunar New Year’s Day, Chuseok Day and Jan 1. Holiday operation varies by listing, so call to confirm.
