From October 1, 2026, you can book KTX and other Korail trains up to two months before you travel. It used to be one month. This autumn there is also a deal where a train trip to a small town earns you a coupon for the same amount, so I put the booking change and the perks in one guide.

I have lost the refresh-the-app race for holiday train seats more than once. A longer booking window is good news.

A month of tickets opens at once on launch day. The window grew from one month to two, so tickets for trains from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1 open together at 10 a.m. on October 1. That time applies to the first day only.

Booking window: one month to two

The transport ministry and Korail extended the window so people can book trains while they plan a trip. Money Today, Sept. 20 (in Korean).

On October 1 only, tickets for trains running November 1 to December 1 open at 10 a.m., according to news reports. Regular sales are said to start at 7 a.m., but please confirm in Korail’s notice. Busan Ilbo.

There is news for visitors from abroad too. Korail plans to grow its supported languages from 7 to 10 by year-end and is developing payment options such as WeChat Pay and Alipay. Foreign rail passengers rose 68% to 6.69 million from January to August this year.

Get your fare back as a coupon

The “2026 Travel in Autumn” campaign runs through October and November. For train travelers, the headline deal is Korail’s free-travel package for depopulating regions (rural areas losing population).

  • How it works: Pick one of the 41 participating regions, travel there by train, and check in with a QR code at a designated sight or a Digital Tourist Resident Card partner.
  • What you get: A coupon worth 100% of the train fare you paid. It is a coupon for your next train ride, not cash, and it is valid for one year.
  • When you get it: Reports say within 10 days after your trip. Confirm the exact timing with Korail.
  • Dates: Sales until November 26, travel from October 1 to November 30.

Herald Business, Seoul Shinmun, Sept. 22 (both in Korean).

Which sights count and how check-in works differ by package. Before you book, make sure your destination is one of the 41 regions on Korail’s package page.

Other autumn perks

  • Naeil-ro rail pass: ₩20,000 off, on sale until November 23.
  • Lodging coupons outside the Seoul area: 80,000 in total. ₩30,000 off for one night at ₩70,000 or more, and ₩70,000 off for two or more nights at ₩140,000 or more. Use them by November 8. Island stays get ₩50,000 off a booking of ₩70,000 or more. Check the official campaign page for how to claim.
  • Regional travel refund: Get part of your spending in depopulating areas back as mobile local gift vouchers. 50% up to ₩100,000 for most travelers, 70% up to ₩140,000 for young adults, through November 30. I covered how to apply in this post on autumn travel savings.
  • Digital Tourist Resident Card: Covered 52 areas as of a June report, and it works for the train check-in. Money Today, June 8 (in Korean).

Who this suits, and who it does not

A good fit

  • You want to lock in a late-foliage trip in November or an early-December weekend
  • You plan a train trip to a smaller town and will ride again later
  • A friend abroad is planning a Korea trip

Not a great fit

  • You want the fare back as cash (only a coupon is given)
  • Your destination is not one of the listed regions
  • You have no later train trip to use the coupon on

The refund is not cash. It is a coupon for your next train, so check that your destination is one of the 41 regions.
