“Half-price travel” is a nickname for regional travel support, not a nationwide discount for every traveler. In 2026, the national autumn campaign returns part of eligible spending as mobile local gift vouchers, and you must apply before you travel. This guide explains eligibility, how the voucher works and the key dates. Checked on 2026-10-12.

Eligibility, especially for visitors to Korea

Each area sets its own rules. For example, Wando’s published rules exclude foreign residents in Korea as well as residents of Wando and certain neighboring areas (Wando participation rules). Overseas visitors should not treat this as an available tourist benefit. Check nationality, residence and identity-verification requirements before you plan around it.

The same caution applies to accommodation promotions: being able to book a room does not mean you can claim a domestic support coupon.

The return is a local voucher

The national announcement describes support paid in mobile local gift vouchers, which work like credit at eligible local businesses, not money back to your bank account. You pay the travel costs first, your claim must be approved, and the voucher has its own participating merchants and expiry date.

The September campaign announcement lists support at 50% of eligible costs, with a standard individual cap of ₩100,000 and a youth cap of ₩140,000. Local notices give the detailed rules (national announcement). As an example, Wando’s September rules list a 70% rate for eligible people aged 19–34, capped at ₩140,000, so approved spending of ₩200,000 could reach the cap. Its travel window was September 1–30, and this shows how a local rule can differ.

How to apply

  1. Choose a participating area. Read that area’s current notice and check whether its budget remains.
  2. Apply and get approval before the trip. Save the approval and the rules for your travel dates.
  3. Keep the required evidence. Check whose name must be on receipts, which payment methods count and whether visit photos are required.
  4. Submit the claim by the local deadline. Keep a copy in case the office asks for another document.

Account registration and travel approval are different steps, so a simple signup does not remove the need for approval.

Accommodation coupons have a different calendar

The 2026 autumn campaign also announced 80,000 accommodation coupons, issued from September 22 at 10 am Korea time through participating booking platforms. The stated use period ends November 8, and the broader travel campaign runs through October and November. Before booking, check the destination, eligible property, minimum spend and coupon deadline, and whether any coupons remain. See the official Korea Tourism Organization stay page.

Train offers need a close read. The advertised “100%” offer for designated regional rail products is a discount voucher worth the fare after required visits are verified. It does not make every ticket free.

Choose the trip first

Start with a trip you can afford at full price, then compare support you actually qualify for. Do not assume two schemes can be combined. A regional trip can also be built around one place, such as the food events in our autumn food trip guide or the events calendar.

Good for / not for

Good for

  • Residents planning a domestic trip who can apply in advance
  • Anyone who wants to understand how local vouchers work

Not for

  • Short-stay foreign visitors. Eligibility is usually restricted.

FAQ

Is it really half price? The announced rate is 50% of eligible costs, paid back as a voucher, with a cap. It is not an instant discount.

Do I get cash back? No. The return is a local gift voucher with its own merchants and expiry date.

Can tourists use it? Often not. Check each area’s rules.
