Hanjeongseon (한정선) is a fruit-filled rice cake shop that started in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, and has spread to department stores and Seoul Station. At about ₩6,000 for a single piece, it is not a cheap snack, yet weekday lunchtime lines are long. A yogurt version sold at GS25 convenience stores (₩3,900) added to the buzz. Some outlets also spell the name Hanjungson. Here are the stores, prices and the reasons for the hype.

What is chapssaltteok?

Chapssaltteok (찹쌀떡) is a chewy rice cake made from glutinous rice (“sticky rice”) and filled with a sweet filling such as red bean paste. In Korea, people give it to students before big exams to say “stick to it” (붙어라), because the rice is so sticky.

Hanjeongseon updated this familiar snack with fresh fruit and yogurt.

What kind of shop is it?

It began at the Seongsu flagship and opened branches at Shinsegae Gangnam, The Hyundai Seoul, Hyundai Trade Center, Hyundai Pangyo, Lotte Department Store Myeongdong and Seoul Station, with a new shop reported at Lotte World Mall in Jamsil. The list keeps growing, so check before you go. The Travel News, Finance Today (in Korean).

Its signature is generous fresh fruit, such as strawberries, Shine Muscat grapes and dried persimmon, packed into the rice cake. The shop is also known for hanji (Korean paper) wrapping and a fortune-pouch-shaped box. Newsis, Sept. 11.

Why do people queue?

  • The cut-open view makes a photo. Photos and videos of the fruit-packed cross-section caught on social media, and that recognition helped it win spots in department stores and at Seoul Station.
  • The texture feels familiar. Industry watchers say the chewy texture Koreans love met the trend for traditional and retro flavors.
  • The packaging is content too. The hanji wrap and fortune-pouch box stand out. Four empty wrappers once went up for ₩50,000 on a secondhand app.
  • Visitors from abroad know it. A Taiwanese tourist told reporters she queued in Myeongdong after seeing it on social media.

In a September report, about 50 people waited on a weekday afternoon at the Shinsegae Gangnam basement store, and it took 50 minutes to buy.

The GS25 Yogurt Mochi

Hanjeongseon and dessert maker Loromello teamed up with GS25 on the “Hanjeongseon Yogurt Mochi,” sold in GS25 stores nationwide from September 3. It costs ₩3,900 and has a yogurt cream filling. Eat it frozen for a sherbet-like bite, or thaw it for a chewy rice cake. Before the launch, only 400 pieces went on sale at a Gangnam store and Incheon Airport. News1, Sept. 3 (in Korean).

It sold 100,000 pieces on day one and was reported to have passed 500,000 by the 20th. That was the best first day for a new GS25 ice cream item. Sell-outs have kept going, and people race to buy in the GS25 app. The Travel News, Sept. 4, Daum, Sept. 26 (in Korean).

Tips before you go

  • Pickup booking: An August source describes booking pickup in the Catchtable app and collecting at the store, until 10 p.m. the day before. This may differ by store, so check.
  • Delivery: As of August, delivery orders were not available.
  • Storage: Fresh-fruit rice cakes are best eaten the same day, or within 2 days in the fridge. Persimmon, red bean butter and Dubai-style ones keep up to 2 weeks frozen.
  • Timing: Lines can be long even on weekday afternoons, so leave extra time.

Who it suits, and who it does not

A good fit

  • You saw the fruit mochi on social media and want to try it
  • You want a special dessert or a gift
  • You do not mind queuing to try something popular

Not a great fit

  • About ₩6,000 a piece feels like too much
  • You hate waiting in line (the convenience-store version may be an easier way in)

Menus and hours can change. Check prices, hours and booking rules on the official Instagram or a map app before you go.
