Small-town Japan trips are popular, but Korea has its own version with no flight needed: Gochang, a quiet county in North Jeolla Province. Its old town is walkable end to end: a 15th-century stone fortress, a traditional market and decades-old family restaurants. The Gochang Moyangseong Festival runs October 15–19 at the fortress, which makes mid-October a good time to go. Checked on 2026-10-07.

Why Gochang eats so well
Gochang has more than 1,500 dolmens (prehistoric stone tombs) and is one of three UNESCO-listed dolmen sites in Korea. Tidal flats, fields and mountains sit side by side, so food was never far away.
It’s still known for pungcheon jangeo (freshwater eel caught where river meets sea), bokbunja (Korean black raspberry, often made into wine), clams and red-clay sweet potatoes. The county and shop owners are linking the old town’s restaurants into a food district with travel routes. A food pass and guidebook are reportedly in the works.
Old-school spots to look for
-
Pungnyeondang (snack shop)
Address: 4 Seongsan 3-gil, Gochang-eup.
Hours: Mon–Sat 10:30 am–9 pm (last order 8:30 pm), closed Sundays.
Roughly: mixed fritters (5 pieces) ₩3,000, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) ₩5,000, tteokbokki with sundae (Korean blood sausage) and tripe ₩8,500, per Diningcode. Phone 063-564-3839. -
Bukgyeong Banjeom (Korean-Chinese)
Address: 127-6 Boritgol-ro, Gochang-eup.
Hours: daily 11 am–8:30 pm.
Jjamjjamyeon is about ₩8,000 and sweet and sour pork about ₩20,000.
Its signature jjamjjamyeon serves black bean and spicy seafood sauces together in one bowl. A blog review says lunch lines get long, so avoid the peak hour.
Market days are the 3rd and 8th of each month. Gochang’s five-day market runs six times a month. During the festival, October 18 (Sun) is a market day. On market days a free loop shuttle (8 am–4 pm, every 40 minutes) stops near the fortress and the market parking lots.
A simple two-day route

Day 1: The old town on foot
- Lunch at one of the old family restaurants
- Browse the traditional market (if it’s market day)
- Walk the wall of Gochang Eupseong Fortress around sunset. It was built in 1453, and because it hugs a hillside, much of it keeps its original shape. The address is 1 Moyangseong-ro, and the Korea Tourism Organization lists admission at ₩3,000 for adults, ₩2,000 for teens and ₩1,500 for children (free for under 6, ages 65+ and Gochang residents). Listed hours differ by source (5 am–10 pm, or 9 am–6 pm), so call 063-560-8067 to confirm.
- Dinner at another old-school spot
- Stay overnight at Gochang Eupseong Hanok Village (128 Dongni-ro, 11 rooms, run by the county), a hanok (traditional house) stay by the fortress
Day 2: Where the food comes from Visit a farm such as Sangha Farm and the dolmen sites, then head back into town. Gochang’s dolmen site, with about 447 dolmens around Jukrim-ri and Maesan-ri, is Korea’s largest cluster. On Saturdays a city tour bus (₩10,000, reserve on 063-560-2958) is said to run a route that includes the fortress.
Time it with the Moyangseong Festival
The 53rd Gochang Moyangseong Festival runs October 15 (Thu) to 19 (Mon), 10 am to 10 pm, free. It’s held around the fortress, the flower garden and the traditional arts village, with a night fortress-walking circle dance, a street parade and a local food and farm market. Programs can change, so check the official notice.
Good for / not for
- Good for: travelers who prefer a local lunch to a famous queue, slow small-town trips, and pairing a festival with a food crawl.
- Not for: anyone who needs reviews and exact hours for every place. Some details here are unconfirmed.

FAQ
Can I do it as a day trip? The old town takes half a day. For two or three restaurants plus the fortress and market, one night is more relaxed.
Can I get there without a car? Express buses run from Seoul Central City (Honam line) to Gochang in about 3 hours 6 minutes, per a timetable site. The terminal has moved and a temporary terminal is in use, so confirm the arrival stop first. The old town is walkable, and a free shuttle runs on market days.
Will restaurants have English menus? Probably not at small family places. A translation app with camera mode helps.
