Most people go to Gangneung, a city on Korea’s east coast, for the beach and the coffee street. This time, try the old town inland. The lanes of Myeongju-dong and Nammun-dong around the old government office, Gangneung Daedohobu Gwana, are now nicknamed “Gangneung Angil,” roughly “the inner lanes.” There is no ticket and no booking, so half a day is enough. With the Hangeul Day long weekend (Oct 9–11) coming up, it is an easy add-on to a Gangneung trip. Checked on 2026-10-08.

The hero image is AI-generated and is not a photo of the real Gangneung Angil.

Start at the old government office

The office is the starting point of this neighborhood. Imyeonggwan Sammun, a Goryeo-era gate, is a designated National Treasure. It carries a plaque reading “Imyeonggwan” said to be written by King Gongmin.

  • Address: 6 Imyeong-ro 131beon-gil, Gangneung
  • Hours: 9 am–6 pm, closed Mondays
  • Admission: free
  • Inquiries: 033-640-4468

See the old center first, then wander into the lanes. It feels like walking from the past into the present. Details follow Telltrip’s guide (in Korean).

A simple half-day route

Marker illustration of a tiled gate, a noodle bowl and a coffee cup joined by a dotted line, labeled half-day route

  1. Gangneung Daedohobu Gwana: see Imyeonggwan Sammun first. Free.
  2. Lunch at Wonseong Sikdang: arrive before the break.
  3. Walk Myeongju-dong and Nammun-dong: stroll the lanes of old houses and stone walls. A hand-drip coffee at Bongbong Bangatgan fits in along the way.
  4. Finish with songhwa coffee at Cafe Pine Pine.

The coast and Anmok coffee street are a short taxi ride away. For more on the city’s coffee scene, see my Gangneung Coffee Festival post for October 21–25.

Good for / not for

Good for: repeat visitors who want something beyond the beach, anyone who likes old buildings, and people who want a classic local meal and a cafe in one walk.

Maybe not for: those hoping for ocean-view cafes, or everything in one building.

FAQ

Can I get there without a car? Take a city bus or taxi from Gangneung Station and check the route in a map app. Inside the old town, walking is easiest.

Can I go on a Monday? The government office is listed as closed on Mondays, and shops have their own days off. October 12, the day after the long weekend, is a Monday.

Is it okay with kids? Some lanes are narrow, so strollers can be tricky. The office grounds are reportedly fairly roomy.
